PARTY SUPPLIES - PARTY BALLOONS
Little Known Facts

Party Rubber Balloons
The first rubber balloons were made by Professor Michael Faraday in 1824 for use in his experiments with hydrogen at the Royal Institution in London. `The caoutchouc is exceedingly elastic', he wrote in the Quarterly Journal of Science the same year. `Bags made of it...have been expanded by having air forced into them, until the caoutchouc was quite transparent, and when expanded by hydrogen they were so light as to form balloons with considerable ascending power....' Faraday made his balloons by cutting round two sheets of rubber laid together and pressing the edges together.

The tacky rubber welded automatically, and the inside of the balloon was rubbed with flour to prevent the opposing surfaces joining together. Toy balloons were introduced by pioneer rubber manufacturer Thomas Hancock the following year in the form of a do-it-yourself kit consisting of a bottle of rubber solution and a condensing syringe.
Vulcanized toy balloons, which unlike the earlier kind were unaffected by changes in temperature, were first manufactured by J.G. Ingram of London in 1847 and can be regarded as the prototype of modern toy balloons."

Party Foil Balloons
Foil balloons, also referred to as metallic or mylar and are actually two sheets of plastic (polyethylene) and nylon that are sandwiched together, then coated with a thin layer of aluminium. Mylar balloons first appeared in New York City in the late 70's and quickly became popular worldwide. A mylar balloon can float 30 times longer than a standard latex balloon, but the float time depends on just how well the two sheets of plastic were sealed at the factory and the altitude. Most foil (mylar) balloons will not float at altitudes over 6500 feet. Foil (metallic) balloons are not biodegradable and they can (and will) conduct electricity, they should never be released outdoors because they could become entangled with power lines and lead to power outages.

The concept and technology for the "metalization" of plastic sheeting that has given us foil balloons comes directly out of the NASA Space Mission. By the way, all of us sculptors should stop referring to foil balloons as Mylar (a trademarked name for a certain type of polyester film) balloons. The balloon industry refers to them as "foil" balloons, because they are made of nylon sheet, coated on one side with polyethylene and metallized on the other. It's evidently so much harder to make balloons out of aluminized Mylar (and probably so much more expensive) that nobody does it.

Party Latex Balloons
Latex balloons are made from 100% natural latex - not plastic. Latex balloons come from rubber trees. Latex is collected by cutting the trees bark, then catching the latex in a cup. Latex harvesting doesn't harm the tree. A tree can produce latex for up to 40 years

HELIUM - BALLOONS
Little Known Facts

Helium Flotation - Helium balloons
Helium Balloons
work by the law of buoyancy. As long as the helium plus the balloon is lighter than the air it displaces, the balloon will float in the air. Helium is a lot lighter than air. The difference is not as great as it is between water and air (a litre of water weighs about 1,000 grams, while a litre of air weighs about 1 gram), but it is significant. Helium weighs 0.1785 grams per litre. Nitrogen weighs 1.2506 grams per litre, and since nitrogen makes up about 80 percent of the air we breathe, 1.25 grams is a good approximation for the weight of a litre of air.

Therefore, if you were to fill a 1-litre soda bottle full of helium, the bottle would weigh about 1 gram less than the same bottle filled with air. That doesn't sound like much -- the bottle itself weighs more than a gram, so it won't float. However, in large volumes, the 1-gram-per-litre difference between air and helium can really add up. This explains why blimps and balloons are generally quite large -- they have to displace a lot of air to float.

If you put helium in a balloon and let go of the balloon, the balloon rises until it pops. When it pops, the helium that escapes has no reason to stop -- it just keeps going and leaks out into space. Therefore, in the atmosphere there is very little helium at any given time. The helium that is there comes from alpha particles emitted by radioactive decay. In places that have a lot of uranium ore, natural gas tends to contain high concentrations of helium (up to 7 percent). This makes sense, since the decay of uranium emits lots of alpha particles and a natural gas pocket tends to be a sealed container underground. Helium is cryogenically distilled out of natural gas to produce the helium we put in balloons.

What causes helium balloons to lose their lift after a day or two?
In brief, because the helium leaks out, they shrink, and become heavier than the volume of air they displace. This causes them to lose buoyancy and "sink" in the air.
The weight balance that keeps a balloon afloat does not leave a lot of room for leakage, so once a little leaks out the balloon falls.

Sometimes you can catch a balloon right around the time it is neutrally buoyant, and applying heat (your hand, for instance) or cold (rub with ice cube) will change its volume just enough to make it rise or sink in the air.

Rubber balloons lose helium quite quickly because of the nature of the material. Thin rubber is not a real good barrier for helium gas. Mylar does a much better job of keeping helium inside, and mylar balloons have much longer "lifetimes" than rubber ones

What is helium?
Helium is a colourless, odourless, tasteless inert gas at room temperature and makes up about 0.0005% of the air we breathe

BALLOON SAYINGS

Balloon Goes Up! (meaning action - particularly trouble commencing)
This saying actually dates from the first world war when observation balloons were hoisted close to the trench lines so that the enemy positions and movements could be watched - observers were also used to help range their own artillery before a bombardment. The hoisting of balloons was often for the infantry a sign that a major attack was imminent. Nowadays though "what time does the balloon go up?" simply means "what time does it start"

CONFETTI FACTS

Confetti' is Italian for sweets.
In Italy they are thrown over the couple as they emerge from the Church in that same way we use paper confetti. Raisins and nuts may also be used.

Confetti for weddings - Prosperity - Fertility
The use of confetti dates back many years and originally it was only used at weddings. Before the use of paper confetti the married couple were showered with flowers, petals, rice or grains. This was to bestow prosperity and fertility on the couple.

Throwing confetti over newly weds is also thought to have originated from the ancient Pagan rite of showering the happy couple with grain to wish upon them a 'fruitful' union. Pagans believed that the fertility of the seeds would be transferred to the couple on whom they fell. The throwing of rice has the same symbolic meaning. Today however, confetti is used at all types of celebrations and parties.

In recent years, small pieces of coloured paper have replaced sweetmeats, grain and nuts as an inexpensive substitute but the use of the word confetti has remained. Grains or nuts were traditionally thrown because they are 'life-giving' seeds. In some European countries, eggs are thrown instead.

Our party supply items will make sure that the bride to be is the centre of attention. Choose from a flashing tiara with veil, flashing silk sash, flashing heart brooch, flashing 'L' Plate and of course a sexy flashing lace garter

Welsh Custom for Hen Nights
In Wales tradition was that, female office and factory workers leaving to get married were often dressed up with balloons, "L" plates, carried a chamber pot (often with salt inside) and were covered in paper flowers and sometimes carried in a barrow to be paraded through the streets. Passing men were encouraged to kiss the prospective bride in exchange for money dropped into the chamber pot. This is used to raise funds towards the wedding feast. While still in evidence, this ritual is dying out.

The origin of Hen Parties is very practical. Hen parties were organized by other women of the village if the bride's father didn't accept the groom and refused to give his daughter a decent dowry. During the party the bride was presented with various things he would need in the first phases of marriage.

Bridal showers or Hen Nights were also said to strengthen the ties between the bride and her friends.

Scottish Custom for Stag Night
On the wedding eve the bridegroom's friends throw the Stag party that often involves a combination of pranks and local customs. In Fife,a version of the custom of feet-washing still persists although only the good humoured bridegrooms permit the whole ritual that used to involve sitting in a tub of water while his chums pulled off his stockings and smeared his legs with a mixture of grease, soot and ashes. In many parts of Scotland variations of this are performed on the groom - all meant to guarantee good fortune in his future marriage.

Stag Night
Celebrations
A stag night, at which only males were allowed, was originally held to ward off evil spirits before the wedding. Around the time of Charles II hen nights were thought to have been introduced to allow the bride's friends and family to examine the trousseau and "bottom drawer". These days both seem to involve a last celebration of single status and appear to involve anything from go-karting to a week away in the sun!

The stag night is the male equivalent of the Bridal Shower or Hen Night. Roman empire soldiers would feast with the Groom the night before his wedding to say goodbye to his irresponsible days of bachelorhood, and to renew their vows of allegiance to their friendships.
Hen NIght Garter
Brides originally tossed a garter, rather than a bouquet, at a wedding reception. In the 14th century, this custom changed after Brides became tired of fighting off drunken men who tried to remove the garter themselves! According to one legend, the garter toss in England evolved from an earlier tradition of "flinging the stocking". On their wedding night, guests would follow the Bride and Groom to their bedroom, wait until they undressed, steal their stockings, and then "fling" them at the couple! The first person to hit the Bride or Groom on the head would supposedly be the next person to marry.

Giving the Bride Away
Years ago women were deemed to belong to their father. When she married it was therefore her father who "gave her away" along with her property to the groom - to whom she then belonged! In some cases the groom was also given a pair of the bride's old shoes to indicate that it was now his responsibility to keep the bride in shoe leather.

Groom Kidnaps Bride
The groom used to kidnap his bride and hold her on his left arm, so that his sword arm was free to fight off any other suitors. This is why the groom normally stands on the right of the bride during the wedding ceremony. If the groom needed help to kidnap his bride he would ask his best friend to be his "best man".

Marriage was often used as a means to bring together two opposing tribes so the families sat on opposite sides in order to try and avoid any fighting in the church.

Wedding Gifts for the Bride
A bride may be given a silver sixpence and asked to place it in her shoe on the wedding day. Though this may sound a very uncomfortable way to walk around on the day the giver is hoping that it will bring you a life of fortune so it may turn out to be a small price to pay if it works!

So meting Old - Something New
Nearly every couple is aware of the old rhyme about something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue but what does it all signify? The "something old" is to show the durability of marriage and the continuity of your old life into the new married one. The "something" new symbolises the start of building your new life together as a married couple. The "something borrowed" item is the one which you may wish to choose most carefully as it should be from a happily married woman whose virtues you most wish for, to assist in ensuring marital bliss. The "something blue" is used to promise love, fidelity and purity.

Buttonholes
Traditionally men wear their buttonholes on the left lapel pointing upwards, whilst women wear theirs on the right lapel. The custom follows on from the early days of jousting, where a Knight would wear his Lady's colours to represent his love for her.

Wedding Ring - Engagement Ring
The custom of wearing a wedding ring stems from ancient times when a bride might have worn a ring made of hemp or rushes, which would have been frequently replaced. The ancient Egyptians believed that the circular shape of the ring was a sign of undying, never ending love, a love without beginning or end. Some of the early engagement rings were also used as a wedding ring to show the "sale" of the woman from her father to the groom, they were usually made of gold as a sign of the groom's worth. The perfect finger for the wedding ring to be worn on is believed to be the third finger of the left hand, as it was traditionally thought that this contained a vein that went straight to t
he heart.
